IPSee

Created with a team while working at Relias

Description

IPSee is a medical VR simulation for training and assessing healthcare workers in following best practices for infection prevention and control (IPC).

In the simulation, the users are tasked to perform various common medical procedures, and as they do so, they can see how contamination is transmitted and learn what to do to prevent it.

The virtual worls simulates a medical room, with interactions happening through hand tracking, making the experience very immersive, which helps greatly with transferring of knowledge and muscle memory both from the real to the virtual, and from the virtual to the real world.

Behind the scenes

As much as I usually prefer game dev and this project is something else, I have to say I'm really proud and happy that I got to be a part of it! Not only is it a project that tries to have a positive impact for society, but the team was one of the best I've ever worked with!

My role

As a senior unity developer in the team I was responsible for the design and implementation of several of the core systems.

Objects system: A small framework that defines how we create different behaviours for our objects which can be reused, as well as how the tech art team can set things up.

Scenario system: A system that defines the steps and objectives of a medical procedure, as well as what objects and interactions are available at any given time.

Hints system: A small system that provides the users with direction if they don't know what they're supposed to do next, or how to do something in VR.

Feedback system: A system for providing the users with immediate feedback when they make mistakes and don't want to follow best practices.

Later in the project I was promoted to team lead, and in that time I got the opportunity to lead our effort in creating a second more steamlined version of our framework, and work on a prototype showcasing how multiplayer can make such a project even more impactful.
